Glenn Wiechers, age 92, formerly of Racine, Wisconsin died peacefully on Friday, May 23, 2008 in Dubuque, Iowa. A simple man with a clear sense of right and wrong – and he enjoyed making it clear to those on the other side of the political spectrum, that he enjoyed being “right!” Graveside funeral services with military honors will be held Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at the Mound Cemetery in Racine. A memorial service will be held later in June. Glenn was born April 28, 1916 in Racine, Wisconsin the son of Edwin Parnameo and Johanna Siegfred (Erickson) Wiechers. Having lost his father when he was only two years old, Glenn was raised by his mother and grandmother – two very hardworking women who instilled in him a strong Protestant work ethic and an unwavering belief in financial responsibility. He attended Jefferson Grade School and McKinley Junior High School. Glenn was involved in Boy Scouts and attained the rank of Eagle Scout. After graduating from Park High School he was given a job as office boy at Western Publishing Company. In 1942 he volunteered for service in the U.S. Navy and advanced to chief petty officer. Following an honorable discharge in 1945 Glenn returned to his job at Western Publishing Company where he worked until 1967 when he retired as vice-president in charge of production at Whitman Publishing Company. Glenn’s community service in Racine was extensive including serving on the boards of Family Service, The Salvation Army, St. Luke’s Hospital and The Wisconsin State Council for Economic Education. He was president of the Racine United Fund, senior vice-president of the Southeast Wisconsin Planning Agency and was a 32nd Degree Mason. He had been a member of the First Baptist Church in Racine. Glenn took pride in the community service organizations that he helped to run while in Racine, and continued to participate in Kiwanis and the Elks Club in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Glenn retired to his cottage on the Wisconsin River near Portage, Wisconsin with his beloved wife, Edna (nee Liessmann) whom he married in June of 1972. Here he enjoyed the serene beauty of the banks of the Wisconsin River. To Glenn, the countryside, lakes, and rolling hills of Southwestern Wisconsin were his idea of heaven. Glenn spent his waning years in the care of his wife Edna’s nephew and niece, in Dubuque. He was always an avid reader, especially of politics and economics, believing firmly and sincerely that people must be knowledgeable in economics for our democracy to survive and one’s freedoms to remain intact. He therefore promoted economic education whenever possible. Preceded in death by his wife, Glenn is survived by his 4 daughters, Susan, Karen, Sally, Mary; and son Peter; as well as six grandchildren, Millard, Jakob, Zachry, Lauren, Katelyn, and Allison and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial donations may be directed to the Wisconsin State Council for Economic Education in Milwaukee; Channel 21, WHA Television; or Madison Symphony Orchestra. |
