Doris M. Picha, age 91 years, of Hillsboro, Wisconsin, passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 at Cottage Care in Mauston, Wisconsin.
She was born on March 20, 1933 in the Town of Plymouth, Juneau County in the area of Fountain Lutheran Church, a place very dear in her heart, a daughter of Carl and Olga (Ormson) Knutson. Her Norwegian family heritage was something she was very proud of.
The family lived in the Elroy and Kendall communities when she grew up. First attending the Fowler Prairie School at Elroy and graduating from the Kendall High School in 1950.
Doris Knutson was united in marriage to Emil Picha on August 21, 1954 at Fountain Lutheran Church and celebrated 60 years of marriage and raised four children, Gary, Mara Jo, Donald and Alan.
Doris held a few different jobs when she was younger, including Steffen's Garage and Ray-O-Vac; following their marriage and Emil going to Mortuary School after serving in the military; they lived in Milwaukee, Weyauwega, and Viroqua prior to moving back to Hillsboro.
They established the Picha Funeral Home in Hillsboro in December of 1962. They also operated a floor covering business and ambulance service in Hillsboro. For several years Doris operated a medical transport business along with the ambulance work.
In July of 1983, the Picha's purchased the Zenner Furniture and Funeral Home in Elroy and operated it for 20 years, with Doris helping with furniture and floor covering sales. She truly enjoyed helping the many customers over the years. Following retirement at the furniture store she helped at Wipf's Flooring in Hillsboro. During that time, she also was the Manager of the Hills Manor and Parkview Apartments.
Doris was a devoted member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hillsboro and the Hillsboro Women's Civic Club and she also enjoyed playing bridge with her card playing friends. She loved her family and friends and could often be found driving to visit them. She enjoyed going to auctions and finding many collectibles and memorabilia items, she had a good eye for finding nice items. Doris also enjoyed her flowers in the yard and feeding the birds, especially Orioles and annually making her sweet lefse.
Survivors include her children, son, Gary (Helen) and children Gary (Stacy), Angie (Rudy) La Fleur, Claire (Austin) Janisch and Iris (Joseph) Yoder; daughter, Mara Jo (Ron) Johnson and children Kent Tengblad (Sarah), Carey Tengblad (Meg) and Rose (Schrell) Tipton; son, Donnie's children, Jacob (Jess) and Jenna (Nick) and son, Alan (Nancy) and children, Heather (Jesse) Daines and Nicole (Bryan) Barkley. Great grandchildren, Eli, Madi, Charlie, Avary, Elise, Isaac, Jase, Margo, Donnie, Emily, Henley, Verona, Lincoln, Anna and Erin; brother, Harold Knutson; sister, Carol Ann Kuhlow and many special nieces and nephews on both the Knutson and Picha sides.
She was preceded in death by her Parents; husband, Emil; son, Donald; siblings, Conrad Knutson, Corena Siekert and Arlene Jensen.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, February 17, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hillsboro, with Rev. Jacob Limpert officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Vernon Cemetery in Hillsboro. Friends may call at the Picha Funeral Home in Hillsboro on Sunday, February 16, 2025 from 2 to 5 p.m. and at the Church on Monday starting at 9:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
