Harold Lee "Doc" Conley, age 96, of Baraboo, Wisconsin passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 20, 2025 with his son, Patrick, and daughter-in-law, Kendra, present.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, December 29, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Wisconsin Dells, with Fr. Luke Powers celebrating. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass at 11:30. Military honors will be provided.

Harold was born on August 31, 1929 in Gary, Indiana to Leslie and Dora (O'Dell) Conley. When the depression hit, he moved with his parents and two older brothers, Warren and Bob (Robert), back to his grandfather's farm in Sailor Springs, Illinois. In 1934, Harold began what would become an extensive education in a small, one-room schoolhouse. After graduating from Clay City High School in 1946, he attended Eastern Illinois University from 1947 to 1949, before transferring to Butler University, where he completed a degree in pharmacy. Shortly after beginning graduate school in pharmacy at the University of Illinois in Chicago in 1953, he received a draft notice. Harold served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. After basic training, he was deployed to Korea, but as the armistice was signed before he arrived, he never saw combat. It was during his time in Korea that Harold got interested in medicine and decided to apply to medical school at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Harold began medical school in 1955, after being honorably discharged from the military. In 1959, he earned his M.D. degree and began a 17-month rotating internship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. In November of 1960, Harold moved from Chicago to Wisconsin Dells to work as a family-practice physician, and quickly became known locally as "Doc."

On May 27, 1961, Harold married Virginia May Counts, whom he had met while in medical school in Chicago. In 1971, Harold and Virginia's son, Patrick, was born. Harold served as a family physician in Wisconsin Dells from 1960 to 2002, becoming known and beloved by many for his dedicated care, which included making hospital rounds daily, personally phoning patients at the end of every workday, making countless house-calls, and spending many hours each year on Continuing Medical Education. His tireless service to others gained him the respect and admiration of many residents in the greater Wisconsin Dells area, and he was the first recipient of St. Clare Hospital's St. Luke the Physician award.

In 2002, Harold and Virginia moved to Stillwater, Minnesota, to be closer to Patrick and his wife, Kendra. Harold continued practicing medicine in Minnesota until 2009, when he retired at the age of 79. In his retirement, Harold self-published his memoirs in a book entitled Country Doctor. After the death of his wife, Virginia, in 2016, Harold returned to the Dells area to live out his remaining years near old friends and former colleagues. Following the example of Patrick and Kendra, Harold was received into the Catholic Church in 2019 at the age of 89.

Harold is survived by his son, Patrick (Kendra) Conley, by his nephews, Mike and Jim Conley and their families, and by his sister-in-law, Patricia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, and his brothers, Warren and Robert.
