Obituary

Mae Carol Kleifgen, age 96, of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin was called home by our Lord Jesus on Saturday, October 17, 2026 at SSM Health Hospice House in Baraboo, WI.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 26, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. at St Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Wisconsin Dells, with Father Piotr Janas celebrating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until the time of Mass at 11:00. Burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery immediately following her funeral.

Mae was born on February 23, 1930 in Dodge County, WI to Lester and Lydia (Skalitzky) Gogert. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Beaver Dam High School. She went on to graduate from Lakeland College at the age of 21 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and a minor in Latin. She also played on the women’s tennis team.

Mae followed in her mother’s footsteps and became a teacher. Her teaching career of 28 years began in Pittsville, Wisconsin where she met her future husband, Joe Kleifgen. They were married in Baraboo Wisconsin on December 26, 1953. In addition to teaching in Pittsville, she also taught at math and science in elementary and high school in Wisconsin Dells, Lake Delton and Baraboo during her career. She loved teaching and saw it as “her calling” as much as it was “her career”. She wanted her students to show an effort and “show your work!” was a common phrase her students often heard. She served on the Board of Directors at St Vincent DePaul.

She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, following and talking with others about Wisconsin sports and reminiscing with her children.

Mae is survived by four of her children: Sons Mike (Terry) Kleifgen of New Lisbon, WI, Steve (Shirley) Kleifgen of Oregon, WI and Bob (Sharyn) Kleifgen of Suamico, WI as well as her daughter Jennifer (Darby) Wright of Albany, WI numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Rodney and sister Phyllis, her husband and daughter, Patty Kleifgen Kelbel.
